ST. MACHAR'S CATHEDRAL BOOKLETS

A Short Guide to the I
Cathedral

s>

The hours of service on Sunday are 1 1 a.m. and 6 p.m.,

and visitors are welcomed at all services. The Cathedral

is open on week-days, free of charge, from 10 a.m to

8 p.m. in summer and until dusk in winter.

HISTORY

ORIGIN. The first Christian settlement on the site of the

|J present building was founded, according to tradition, by
Machar, a disciple of St. Columba, about 580 a.d. The

on the

is

given

traditional story of St. Machar's mission
Crombie Window, next the War Memorial.

PRESENT STRUCTURE.— In 1136, King David I. trans-
lated the bishopric from Mortlach to Aberdeen, and the Norman
Church which by this time stood on the site became the Cathedral
of the diocese. It was not until the time of Bishop Alexander
Kininmunde about 1357 that plans for a great Cathedral were
prepared, and the work begun. The two most easterly pillars,
of sandstone in contrast to the granite of which the rest of-the
building is constructed, are said to date from this time.

Bishop Henry de Lichtoun, 1423-1440, completed the two
western towers, still standing, and laid the foundations for the
Nave and great Central Tower. Bishop Elphinstone completed
the Central Tower about 1512. He also made preparations for
building a new Choir, but it was probably never completed.
